Held at Rydes South Bank in Brisbane in July 2019, the Queensland Hardware Industry awards were a celebration of the independent hardware industry.
Comedian Kat Davidson was the master of ceremonies. She added a lighter feel to the night with her humour, but the night belonged to the hard working stores, suppliers and individuals that make our industry great.
“It was great to see many of the regional stores taking out the awards. This is a good indicator of how strong the industry is across the state” said Alicia Oelkers Executive Officer for Hardware Australia
The awards also recognise the symbolic relationship between stores and suppliers working together to ensure strong independents survive. Suppliers awarded on the night for being the best in their categories.
Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.
The end of the formalities included a raffle fundraising for Love your Sister. This was in memory of Kerri Lang from Moura Mitre 10, who was a big supporter of Love your Sister Foundation, raising $1,800 on the night. Thank you to all the suppliers who donated items on the night.
The remainder of the night saw guests networking and having fun, with gaming tables, including Black Jack, Poker & Roulette.
A special thank you to our sponsor without you we could not recognise the best of the Queensland Hardware Industry.

The 2019 Queensland Industry Rising Star is passionate, knowledgeable, easy going and bubbly. Starting at just 13 years of age, she has a long career ahead of her. Congratulations Katy Nicholls-Hurley from Jeays Mitre 10. The last award for the evening acknowledged a truly deserving individual who has given a lifetime to not only the store he manages, his local community but also our Industry. He is currently the Chair of Queensland Committee Hardware Australia and continues to give so much back.
2019 Brian Lee Industry Legend – Clint Spence
The classification of a Legend is applied to honour extraordinary individual effort and to acknowledge and recognise the recipient’s continuous commitment and support to the Queensland hardware industry. Brian Lee was the very definition of a legend, always giving back to the Hardware community and tirelessly fighting for the future of independent hardware in Queensland, it is only fitting that this award be renamed in his honour.
Starting his career at Beaudesert Hardware in 1977 as a counter boy. He later became Store Manager in 1999 just as the GST was implemented, this proved to be one of the most challenging times in his career. With many fond memories of Beaudesert Mitre 10’s 50 year anniversary, the celebrations included a full page spread in the local newspaper and a party with past and present employees and suppliers. More recently, the store celebrated their 55th Anniversary.
12 year’s ago he was recruited by the late Brian Lee to join the then HAQ committee and he now is the current chair of Queensland’s Hardware Australia committee and represents the state on Hardware Australia’s National Committee. He is also on the board of the local chamber of commerce, has a seat on the committee for an aged care facility in Beaudesert, has previously sat on the board of the local Squash club, and has been a scout leader. Wow, I’m not sure when his wife Nancy has time to see him.
He is truly a valued member of the hardware industry and within his local community. He has a passion for our industry and is described by his team as a quiet and selfless leader who wants nothing but the best for the people around him and for the industry he loves.
