WHS Management Plan, why it’s a must for every business

Workplace health and safety is at the forefront of everyone’s mind at the moment. The case involving insufficient traffic management where the directors were convicted of industrial manslaughter and fined $3 million, has given us all a wakeup call.

TABMA’s Workplace Health and Safety Officer Dean Wilson, has received many calls from members who are concerned they are not meeting their minimum legislative requirements for their businesses. Legislation does differ from state to state, however with a common goal, “businesses must ensure the health and safety of your workers and not put the health and safety of other people at risk”.

A workplace health and safety management plan is one tool that every business should implement. This tool will assist your business meet its obligations according to work health and safety legislation. It applies to all areas of the operation including you, your staff, and other persons at risk from work carried out in your business.

The plan should comprise of several sections:

Part A – Work Health and Safety arrangements

This outlines your businesses commitment to safety in the workplace, including details on:

  • Work health and safety policy
  • Responsibilities
  • Consultation and communication arrangements
  • Training
  • WHS risk assessment
  • Right of entry
  • WHS issue resolution
  • Authoritative sources

Part B: General WHS Information:

Covers WHS information relating to the overall business. Key areas that should be covered are:

  • Emergency Procedures
  • Hazard/injury/incident reporting
  • Reporting of notifiable incidents
  • First aid
  • WHS training and induction
  • Risk management and the register
  • Workplace hazard inspections
