Category Description

This category recognises the future leaders of our industry. Nominees have demonstrated a desire to progress within the industry and shown their managers that they can become a leader or are already a leader.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award nominees must be 30 years or under by 31st December 2021, have been employed by their current employer for a minimum of 12 months or a minimum of 2 years within the hardware industry and is for store employees only. They must have demonstrated to their manager or supervisor that they have a desire to be a future leader of the hardware industry.

Nominees can come from Store Owners, Managers, Supplier Representatives or Buying Group representatives. If they have been nominated by anyone other than their Manager or Supervisor, we will seek permission prior to confirming the nomination.

Judging process

Nominees undergo a telephone interview where they are judged on the following:

  • Their work experience and history
  • Their passion for the hardware industry & desire to progress within the industry.
  • Their knowledge of merchandising, stock control, customer service and marketing/promotions.
  • Their ability to work with others and inspire those they work with to achieve better results.

Finalists are then interviewed in person or via video conference, where judges will delve into the above point further and a winner will be decided.

Category Description

This award recognises an employee who has excelled in their day to day duties and is loyal to your business.

Nominations can by made by employers of retailer/trade stores or suppliers and can be from any part of your business.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, the employee needs to have been with the business for more than 12 months.

Judging Process & Criteria

A telephone interview is conducted with the nominee and they are judged on their achievements in the past 12 months, knowledge of their department/current role requirement, and standard of customer service.

The Prize

Finalists and winners are acknowledged by the industry at the awards night and via social media and news articles in leading industry publications.

The winner also receives a trophy.

Legend of the Year
Category Description

The Hardware Industry Legend Award recognises an individual who has shown continuous commitment and support to the hardware industry in their state. These individuals have helped shape the independent industry in the past or present and have shown determination to secure our future, whether it be through the expansion of their own business, involvement in various committee and industry bodies, or helping fellow hardware owners to reach their potential or get them through tough times. They are a leader.

Nomination for this award can come from store owners, managers, employees, or industry suppliers.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must be able to demonstrate how they have contributed to the independent hardware industry.

Judging process

Nominations are evaluated by a panel of state committee members. Where necessary an interview is conducted to ensure they meet the criteria.

The Prize

The Hardware Industry Legend receives a trophy and is acknowledged by the industry at the awards night, via social media and news articles in leading industry publications.

30+ Years of Service
Category Description

This award recognises the hardworking individuals who have dedicated a lifetime to our industry. It is an opportunity for employers to thank their staff for their service.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must have worked in the industry (store or supplier) for one or more employers for 30+ years.

The Prize

Recipients are acknowledged at the state industry awards event receiving a certificate for their service. 

Store of the Year
Category Description

These awards recognise stores that have most effectively capitalised on market opportunities and found a way to pivot or adapt to changing circumstances. They have ensured success through exceptional customer service and fostered a workplace culture that promotes staff retention and development/training. 

There are 4 categories

  • Store under 2500sqm
  • Store over 2500sqm
  • Trade Store of the Year
  • Garden Department of the Year

Nominations for this award can come from store owners, industry suppliers, or industry buying groups. You can self nominate.

Eligibility

This award is open to all stores that have been under the same ownership for at least two full financial years. Stores can be nominated in more than one category provided they meet the criteria for each.

Selection criteria for each of the categories are as follows:

Store of the year Under 2500sqm – Total footage (excluding the car park is under 2500sqm) and judging is based on overall store performance.

Store of the year Over 2500sqm – Total footage (excluding car park is over 2500sqm) and Judging is based on overall store performance.

Trade store of year – This category is for stores with 80% trade business. Judging is focused on the trade aspect of their business.

Garden Department of the Year – This category is for stores whose garden departments are a key part of their business.  

Judging process

A telephone interview is conducted with nominees and they are judged on the following:

  • How their business has grown over the past 12 months including achievements and highlights.
  • Their dedication to their team development and training
  • Unique selling points/competitive advances and how these translate into market dominance.
  • Their approach to service, distribution, and customer service.
  • Unique innovation (or innovations) that have shaped their business, not limited to financial gain.
  • How they promote a culture of people empowering their business, including how they have responded to the COVID workplace disruptions.

The Prize

Finalists and winners are acknowledged by the industry at the awards night, via social media and news articles in leading industry publications. Winners receive a trophy, a press release, and a winner logo used for marketing materials.

Sales Representative of the Year
Category Description

This category recognises the hardworking Sales Representatives who go above and beyond for their stores. They help to grow sales, support stores with customers and warranties, and train staff in their products.

Nominations for this award can come from store owners, supplier senior managers and industry buying group representatives.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must have been employed with their current employer for more than 12 months.

Judging process

A telephone interview is conducted with the nominees and they are judged on the support provided to their customers and their company as well as their achievements over the past 12 months.

Nominees are also asked to provide references for three (3)of their customers so that we can obtain testimonial for their work. 

The Prize

Finalists and winners are acknowledged at the state industry awards event, via social media, and in news articles in leading industry publications. Winners receive a trophy.

Supplier of the year
Category Description

This category recognises the dedicated suppliers who supply the independent hardware industry and through all levels of their business provide outstanding service and support.

Nominations are received directly from Store Owners and Managers.

This award has 8 categories with an overall winner awarded the Overall Supplier of the Year. Categories include:

  • Building Products
  • Garden & Outdoor
  • Hardware
  • Paint
  • Paint accessories
  • Tool
  • Timber
  • Kitchen & Bathroom
  • Electrical and Lighting

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award suppliers must supply to the independent hardware industry for a minimum of 2 years. Nominations can only be obtained from Store Owners or Managers.

Judging process

Winners are decided by the number of votes received with the overall supplier of the year winner receiving the most votes across all categories.

The Prize

Finalists and winners are acknowledged at the state industry awards event, via social media, and in news articles in leading industry publications. Winners receive a trophy.

These individuals have helped shape their communities in the past or present either it be through the expansion of their own business, involvement in various committees and industry bodies or helping fellow hardware owners and managers to reach their potential or get them through tough times. They are a leader.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must be able to demonstrate how they have contributed to the industry or their community.

Judging process

Nominations are evaluated by a panel of state committee members. Where necessary an interview is conducted to ensure they meet the criteria.

The Prize

Bevan McDonald Award
Category Description

The Bevan McDonald Award recognises an individual who has shown continuous commitment and support to the hardware industry in their state. These individuals have helped shape the independent industry in the past or present and have shown determination to secure our future, whether it be through the expansion of their own business, involvement in various committee and industry bodies, or helping fellow hardware owners to reach their potential or get them through tough times. They are a leader.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must: 

  1. Worked within the hardware industry for a minimum of 15 years. 
  2. Contributed to the growth of the industry outside of his/her position within the company by whom they are employed.
  3. Must be a well respected member of the Hardware Industry with high moral standing among their peers.

Stock shortages during the pandemic have played a huge role in stores ability to operate efficiently. This year we are looking for suppliers who have gone above and beyond over the past 12 months to assist stores during COVID.

There are 8 categories with an overall winner awarded the Overall Supplier of the Year.

Categories include:

  • Building Products
  • Garden & Outdoor
  • Hardware
  • Paint
  • Paint accessories
  • Tool
  • Timber
  • Kitchen & Bathroom
  • Electrical and Lighting
Eligibility

To be eligible for this award suppliers must supply to the independent hardware industry for a minimum of 2 years. Nominations can only be obtained from Store Owners or Managers.

Judging process

All stores are asked to select their best supplier in each category. We will then randomly select five stores in the state and ask them to rate each finalist on satisfaction, supply and presentation.

Winners are decided by the number of votes received as well as store feedback. The overall supplier of the year winner will have received the most votes across all categories and have this supported by store feedback.

The South Australian Hardware Industry has a proud history of supporting the Make-A-Wish foundation at our Awards Dinners.

Over the years we have fundraised $74,321 and made 15 magical wishes come true.

Legend of the Year
Category Description

The Hardware Industry Legend Award recognises an individual who has shown continuous commitment and support to the hardware industry in their state. These individuals have helped shape the independent industry in the past or present and have shown determination to secure our future, whether it be through the expansion of their own business, involvement in various committee and industry bodies, or helping fellow hardware owners to reach their potential or get them through tough times. They are a leader.

Nomination for this award can come from store owners, managers, employees, or industry suppliers.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must be able to demonstrate how they have contributed to the independent hardware industry.

Judging process

Nominations are evaluated by a panel of state committee members. Where necessary an interview is conducted to ensure they meet the criteria.

The Prize

The Hardware Industry Legend receives a trophy and is acknowledged by the industry at the awards night, via social media and news articles in leading industry publications.

30+ Years of Service
Category Description

This award recognises the hardworking individuals who have dedicated a lifetime to our industry. It is an opportunity for employers to thank their staff for their service.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must have worked in the industry (store or supplier) for one or more employers for 30+ years.

The Prize

Recipients are acknowledged at the state industry awards event receiving a certificate for their service. 

Store of the Year
Category Description

These awards recognise stores that have most effectively capitalised on market opportunities and found a way to pivot or adapt to changing circumstances. They have ensured success through exceptional customer service and fostered a workplace culture that promotes staff retention and development/training. 

There are 4 categories

  • Store under 2500sqm
  • Store over 2500sqm
  • Trade Store of the Year
  • Garden Department of the Year

Nominations for this award can come from store owners, industry suppliers, or industry buying groups. You can self nominate.

Eligibility

This award is open to all stores that have been under the same ownership for at least two full financial years. Stores can be nominated in more than one category provided they meet the criteria for each.

Selection criteria for each of the categories are as follows:

Store of the year Under 2500sqm – Total footage (excluding the car park is under 2500sqm) and judging is based on overall store performance.

Store of the year Over 2500sqm – Total footage (excluding car park is over 2500sqm) and Judging is based on overall store performance.

Trade store of year – This category is for stores with 80% trade business. Judging is focused on the trade aspect of their business.

Garden Department of the Year – This category is for stores whose garden departments are a key part of their business.  

Judging process

A telephone interview is conducted with nominees and they are judged on the following:

  • How their business has grown over the past 12 months including achievements and highlights.
  • Their dedication to their team development and training
  • Unique selling points/competitive advances and how these translate into market dominance.
  • Their approach to service, distribution, and customer service.
  • Unique innovation (or innovations) that have shaped their business, not limited to financial gain.
  • How they promote a culture of people empowering their business, including how they have responded to the COVID workplace disruptions.

The Prize

Finalists and winners are acknowledged by the industry at the awards night, via social media and news articles in leading industry publications. Winners receive a trophy, a press release, and a winner logo used for marketing materials.

Sales Representative of the Year
Category Description

This category recognises the hardworking Sales Representatives who go above and beyond for their stores. They help to grow sales, support stores with customers and warranties, and train staff in their products.

Nominations for this award can come from store owners, supplier senior managers and industry buying group representatives.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must have been employed with their current employer for more than 12 months.

Judging process

A telephone interview is conducted with the nominees and they are judged on the support provided to their customers and their company as well as their achievements over the past 12 months.

Nominees are also asked to provide references for three (3)of their customers so that we can obtain testimonial for their work.

Supplier of the year
Category Description

This category recognises the dedicated suppliers who supply the independent hardware industry and through all levels of their business provide outstanding service and support.

Nominations are received directly from Store Owners and Managers.

This award has 8 categories with an overall winner awarded the Overall Supplier of the Year. Categories include:

  • Building Products
  • Garden & Outdoor
  • Hardware
  • Paint
  • Paint accessories
  • Tool
  • Timber
  • Kitchen & Bathroom
  • Electrical and Lighting

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award suppliers must supply to the independent hardware industry for a minimum of 2 years. Nominations can only be obtained from Store Owners or Managers.

Judging process

Winners are decided by the number of votes received with the overall supplier of the year winner receiving the most votes across all categories.

Timber merchants are frequently asked to interpret plans and sketches for customers in order to provide quotes. This course provides participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to provide effective estimation advice to clients based on simple construction drawings. By attending this workshop, participants will confidently be able to provide accurate estimates in a timely manner leading to increased customer satisfaction with the service provided and repeat business.

A nationally recognised statement of attainment of competency in FWPCOT3214 Take Off Material Quantities, FWPCOT3204 Prepare Sketches and Drawings will be issued following successful completion if assessment is undertaken.

 How to reduce errors at the design and quoting stage.

 How to maximise sales by identifying add-ons and ancillary items.

How to interpret sketches and drawings.

 How to accurately “take off” measurements and quantities from drawings.
