Women in Hardware was established in August 2017 when cofounders Julie Murphy (Murphy’s Mitre 10) and Gloria Jacob’s (Hedland Home Timber & Hardware) had a vision of forming “a support group for all the women in hardware”.
The initiative then evolved from a group of members who worked to support the pathway of women within our industry. The group has a focus on providing a forum for females to share ideas, experiences and resources with one-another. Women in Hardware Australia hopes to become the leading women’s initiative within the industry and is supported by the peak industry association Hardware Australia.
Women in Hardware in conjunction with Hardware Australia has run several successful events across the country connecting women in the industry, and empowering them to succeed in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
Women in Hardware is run by a national committee of volunteers who aim to implement programs, initiative and events to support women in the hardware industry.
Membership is open to store owners, managers, employees and sales representatives, and is free. We encourage you to join like minded women and share your story, trade tactics (for dealing with customers who think you don’t know what you’re doing) and make new friends.
Our purpose is simple
To mentor, support and assist women within the independent hardware industry to succeed and excel in their various roles, and create opportunities and pathways into leadership positions.

Julie’s Story, Cofounder (owner Murphy’s Mitre 10, VIC)
In August 2017, WIH was born. Together with Gloria Jacob, we had a vision of forming a support group for all the women in hardware. I began my full-time working life as a Chef in a very male-dominated industry back in the late 70’s. I loved working with the guys and had huge respect for them. After having my 5 children, I went back into the workforce, now in a female-dominated industry, Catholic education. The school I worked at employed 48 females and 2 males, quite a contrast to what I knew.
Early 2013, my life was thrown into turmoil when my beloved husband, Paul, passed away suddenly. Paul was a blue blood, hardware was his life, Mitre 10 was his life. He had owned a Mitre 10 store since his 20’s. I was the wife of a Store Owner with my own career. I knew many respected people within the industry but never imagined that one day I would be running our Hardware Store.
Whilst I had/have some wonderful male mentors within our industry, I felt the lack of female contact. I have found over the journey that women are great at running businesses and love talking about it, they also like to engage in a more personal manner, and this Is what lead me to the conception of WIH. My vision was always for WIH to be a support group.
